Bills trade rumors Derrick Henry Hunter Renfrow among best deadline options to fix Buffalo
Blog Article
The Bills entered the 2023 NFL season among the favorites to win the Super Bowl. Thus far, they haven't quite lived up to those expectations.Entering Week 8, the Bills have a record of 4-3. That's not too bad, and it still puts them in the thick of the AFC playoff race. But in recent weeks, the Bills have shown some weak points on both sides of the ball, and that has caused them to drop two of their last three games. So, the team could need a little jolt or at least some extra depth to get it through what has been an injury-plagued season to date. The NFL's trade deadline will pa s at 4 p.m. ET on Halloween, so if the Bills want to swing any sort of big move, they will have to do so in the aftermath of their Week 8 "Thursday Night Football" game.MORE: But who could the Bills target? Below is a breakdown of the most likely trade candidates for Buffalo as it looks to bolster its roster. The Bills have a strong roster, but they could stand to add a couple of upgrades on offense while replenishing some of their injured depth on defense. Below are the positions that are most likely to be addre sed by Buffalo.Wide receiver: The Bills have a dynamic outside receiver duo in Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, but they could use some more talent at their No. 3 wide-out position. Adding a veteran slot man would probably be the team's top option to enhance its receiving corps.Running back: James Cook has enjoyed a breakout year as the team's lead back and is averaging 4.8 yards per carry. That said, the team has little depth behind him with Damien Harris hurt, so shopping for a powerful complement at the position may be a worthwhile pursuit.Cornerback: Losing Tre'Davious White has left the Bills thin on experience at Asdrubal Cabrera Jersey the cornerback position. In fact, they were in such dire straits that they signed Josh Norman to the practice squad. Adding a versatile, starting cornerback would probably help Buffalo and if the team can get a No. 1 guy, it shouldn't hesitate to make a move.Linebacker: Like White, Matt Milano is out for the season. He is one of the best linebackers in the NFL, so replacing him won't be easy. Still, the Bills should be on the lookout for a replacement considering that third-round rookie Dorian Williams is still adapting to the NFL level.Mike Evans, WR, BuccaneersEvans would probably be the dream get for Bills fans. The 10-year veteran has recorded nine consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and is on pace to eclipse that mark again in 2023. The 6-5 playmaker would be a good contested-catch complement for Diggs and would open up space for Davis to work as a big slot receiver. The Buccaneers enter Week 8 with a 3-3 record, so their offloading Evans doesn't seem especially likely. But perhaps if Tampa Bay is dealt a bad enough lo s at Buffalo's hands on Thursday, the Bills could convince them to give up Evans to jumpstart a long-term retool.Hunter Renfrow, WR, RaidersEvans has the highest ceiling among the potential Bills receiver targets, but Renfrow might be the best fit. He's a plug-and-play slot receiver in the mold of Cole Beasley, who enjoyed succe s during his three-plus seasons in Buffalo.Renfrow has just eight catches for 73 yards in seven games during the 2023 NFL season and has averaged just 2.6 catches and 23.7 yards per game in Josh McDaniels' offense. He would have a much bigger role in Buffalo and could come closer to the stats he logged during his 103-catch, 1,038-yard, nine-touchdown season in 2021.Derrick Henry, RB, TitansIf the Bills are looking to give a jolt to their 14th-ranked running game without giving Josh Allen extra work as a runner, Henry would be a great addition. The longtime Titan has been one of the NFL's best running backs over the last five seasons, and he has averaged 375 carries, 1,802 yards and 16 touchdowns per 17 games played since 2019.Henry's physical, downhill running style would complement the shifter, elusive receiving back James Cook quite well. It also would make the Bills even more of a red-zone threat than they already are their red-zone touchdown percentage of 71.4 is second-best in the league behind only the Dolphins as Allen and Henry are both enormous, strong players who can bully the ball into the end zone.WEEK 8 NFL PICKS:|Jerry Jeudy, WR, BroncosHere's another higher-end receiver target for the Bills. Jeudy was once a first-round pick by the Broncos, but his i sues with drops and consistency have made him a potential trade candidate during the 2023 season.Jeudy hasaveraged a respectable 66 catches for 943 yards and three touchdowns per 17 games played during his career. If he can clean up his i sues, he could emerge as a quality starter and another electric piece for Buffalo on offense. It's also notable that Allen would be the best quarterback with whom Jeudy has worked during his career Neil Walker Jersey by far. That may be enough to jumpstart him and take over the No. 2 receiver job acro s from Diggs.Adam Thielen, WR, PanthersSpeaking of partners for Diggs, Thielen was that for several years during their time together in Minnesota. They were a dynamic one-two punch then and the idea of rekindling now with Thielen in the slot may appeal to Buffalo.Thielen is on pace for 139 catches, 1,442 yards and 11 touchdowns thus far in his first season with the Panthers. At age 33, it's fair to wonder just how long Thielen's resurgence may last, but the Bills are in a win-now window and can afford to chase his great season. The only other question is whether Carolina would be willing to give up a player who has been rookie Bryce Young's lone productive receiver during the 2023 season. That may lead Carolina to hang onto the veteran for the rest of the year.Zack Mo s, RB, ColtsThe Bills sent Mo s to the Colts as part of the Nyheim Hines trade at the last trade deadline. Could they try to get back the physical runner? Mo s never enjoyed much succe s in Buffalo, but he has averaged 4.7 yards per carry Nolan Ryan Jersey over the last two seasons. If the Bills think his triumphs in Indianapolis are replicable, then his strong, downhill running style would be a good fit in conjunction with James Cook. The Colts may be willing to trade Mo s, who is set to be a free agent after the season, following their signing of Jonathan Taylor to a three-year extension. Mo s remains the NFL's second-leading rusher (523 yards) despite losing carries to Taylor and mi sing a game, so there's reason to be excited about his potential.MORE: Parris Campbell, WR, GiantsHere's one, final receiver candidate for the Bills to consider. Campbell wouldn't be a sexy pickup he has just 16 catches for 85 yards in 2023 and is falling out of favor with the Giants but he is a natural fit in the slot and does po se s great speed. Perhaps Ken Dorsey could better figure out how to use him than Brian Daboll could with the Giants.Campbell broke out in 2022 with 623 receiving yards and three touchdowns; both marks were career-highs. He could play an Isaiah McKenzie-type role in this offense if the Bills want to add some gadget looks back into the fold.Jaylon Johnson, CB, BearsPer usual, the defensive options available at the 2023 trade deadline are fewer than the offensive players, but Johnson could be a nice get if he shakes loose.Johnson has an athletic 6-0, 196-pound frame and the length needed to make plays on the ball as a strong starting outside corner. In the short term, he would be a solid replacement for the injured Tre'Davious White; long term, he could end up being White's partner on the boundary. That would give the team some good physicality at the cornerback position.Josey Jewell, LB, BroncosJewell may not be a household name, but the Broncos starter has been a productive linebacker when healthy during his career. In 2022, he racked up 128 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and four pa s defenses while serving as a key cog in Ejior Evero's defense.Jewell hasn't done as well in Vance Joseph's scheme, but the talent is still there. If the Bills are comfortable taking on the free-agent-to-be as an injury replacement for Milano, he would be an upgrade over what the team currently has.
